Can not get a portfolio to display properly

I can not get a portfolio to display properly, and maybe I misunderstood the nature of these portfolios before purchasing.

I have 3 categories right now, and each category has approx 30-40 images, yet I can not get any of them to display. I performed the demo data import yet my theme seems to be missing much of the demo data relate to the portfolios.I followed the documentation as I understood it, and also read the previous topic on this problem to no avail. any help is appreciated.
