There is no need to upload a squared featured image. Upload a regular Full-size image and the theme will handle it and create the necessary versions it needs.

Are you using the Masonry – Yes option to display the portfolio? If so then it uses the “Masonry Size” option that is available in each portfolio item and the tiles can be either 1×1, 1×2, 2×1 or 2×2 and this means you can also have rectangles.

Just set the masonry option of the Portfolio shortcode to “Yes” and make sure each Portfolio item has the right size. E.g. “1×1”.
