Add a sidebar to a custom post type template from a child theme

sorry to ask so many questions…i created the custom template it works fine. Now i am trying to use one of the sidebars i’ve created but get_sidebar is not showing anything. Any idea where to look? Maybe call it get_sidebar(‘mysidebar’)

Hey,

get_sidebar() loads the file sidebar.php
get_sidebar('mysidebar'); loads the file sidebar-mysidebar.php

if you then inspect those files you will see that they are trying to read the sidebar position from the “page-settings”. In a custom post type there is no such settings and therefore no sidebar is displayed.

We suggest you to create a copy of the file sidebar.php into your child theme and rename it to sidebar-mysidebar.php then call this from your custom post type template using get_sidebar('mysidebar');

Now edit the sidebar-mysidebar.php and remove the unnecessary checks plus make sure to change the dynamic_sidebar( $sidebar ) to dynamic_sidebar( 'your_new_sidebar_id' ).

E.g.:

<?php
global $sidebar_width;
?>
<div class="grid3 left-sidebar" id="sidebar">
    <div class="row">
        <?php $sidebar_width = 3; // Used when displaying widgets ?>
        <?php if ( function_exists( 'dynamic_sidebar' ) && dynamic_sidebar( 'ENTER_THE_NEW_SIDEBAR_ID_HERE' ) ) : else : ?>

        <div class="pre-widget">
            <div class="space"></div>
            <p><strong>Widgetized Sidebar</strong></p>
            <p>This panel is active and ready for you to add some widgets via the WP Admin</p>
        </div>

        <?php endif; ?>

        <div class="space"></div>

    </div>
</div>

global $sidebar_width;

$sidebar_width = 3; // Used when displaying widgets ?>

if ( function_exists( 'dynamic_sidebar' ) && dynamic_sidebar( 'ENTER_THE_NEW_SIDEBAR_ID_HERE' ) ) : else : ?>

<p><strong>Widgetized Sidebar</strong></p>

<p>This panel is active and ready for you to add some widgets via the WP Admin</p>

</div>

endif; ?>

</div>

Hope it’s clear,
Cheers
