Most themes have some way of automatically getting the current year so we don’t have to update this every year. What is your recommended method?

Unfortunately there is no such shortcode in the theme but it’s super easy to create it. Just add the code into your child theme’s functions.php file. Here is an example of a simple year shortcode:
