Could you please re-phrase your question? Not sure we understand it correctly.
When the page is not boxed the whole page is visible thus the image is not visible.

The settings for the Background can be found in “Theme Options” -> “Pattern Options” -> “Background Pattern (Boxed layout only)”. Either choose image or pattern or remove them all to not have any image.

If the above did not help, please describe how it is behaving right now, How you want it to behave and why it is not working.

Please, provide the URL of the page where the problem occurs so we can see it and inspect it.
