In addition, the button on the demo page sometimes is hidden by the header. I likely don’t want a button element there for my site, but I would like to understand why it’s not displaying properly so I can problem solve on my own.

The slider is made using the “Revolution Slider” Plugin which is a part of the package downloaded from ThemeForest. So you need to install this plugin into WordPress separately. The strange code you see is called “shortcode” and it’s there because it needs the slider to be installed in order to work.

Once plugin installed check the plugin’s documentation to get familiar with it. To import the slider as it is on our live preview just import this slider into revolution:

If you do not want to use external plugin like Revolution slider you can use a simple slider made by us available under the list of page elements.

Regarding the hidden button.. The problem might be caused by the missing slider. Please resolve that and check if the problem persists.
