I have been through all the options but I can’t see how to have an image on the top of the category archives. I just get a grey banner:

How would I put an image as the header like this:
https://www.newageteacher.com/blog/

I can’t work out what/where the default page template is.

Since the categories are “Virtual Pages” (just a list of existing items) they do not have a featured image field so it cannot be attached.

When a category is displayed the “archive.php” is used. You could however duplicate it and remove the unnecessary parts and “hardcode” the header with the correct images in a “stronger” template according to the template hierarchy:

As you see from the image, you could use the “category.php” file to control all categories only or even “category-$catID.php” to control an exact category via template.

This all should however be done via child theme to avoid losing your changes in the next theme update. Hope all is clear.
