I’d like for clicking on those icons to open up the social media site in a new tab. Is there a simple way to do this?

sure, there is a simple solution. WordPress has some common settings hidden, so you have to go to ‘Appearance > Menus’. In top right corner are screen options and when you click on it, menu will roll from top. Check the ‘Link Target’ option and then you will have ability to set target for each menu item.
