However, it doesn’t – they are all completely uniform / same size. The only thing that changes when selecting masonry is, the height of every portfolio item halves so it’s a perfect square.

When you create a portfolio item you have the option to set its Background and Text color and Masonry layout size:

boldial_portfolio_detail_color_settings_massonry

Make sure to set this masonry size for every item. You can then make a the portfolio look like “tiles” of 1×1, 1×2, 2×1, 2×2 rectangles.
