Unfortunately there’s no such possibility as the image is set as a background-image and the HTML model does not allow opacity on the background image only without affecting the content of the element as well.

The only way to handle it at the moment is using transparent PNG or JPG with image already faded to the desired color in order to minimize file-size :(

We have just released Boldial v1.2 and the Assets Plugin v1.2 which apart from other changes do add the row background image opacity. So there is no more need for transparent PNG files or colored JPGs. Please download it and follow the update instructions in the documentation. Hope this is good news for you :)
