These are just some of the things I noticed… there may be more.

I didn’t make any changes to these things myself, so I was wondering if perhaps there is an error in the theme somehow?

Just had a look and all seems to look just fine. Have you tracked what the problem was?

Maybe a third-party plugin which generated invalid code and errors?

I thought perhaps you had discovered something, but it sounds like it was either a fluke or a plugin glitch like you mentioned. It could have also been a temporary server unavailability as you said all custom images were missing.
