However, now I have the theme my blog displays the featured image (which I uploaded to use as the background for the title on the blog itself once opened) and not the video within the post as I hoped it would. Any ideas?

In order to display Blog Post Media in the overview page, you need to set the Post Format to be either “Audio”, “Video”, “Quote”, etc..

Then in the Media custom box:
blog_audio_field

Unfortunately videos are not displayed in the front end in the Masonry Design (as per our preview https://themes.ishyoboy.com/kopy/blog/). But they are in the Classic Design.

Regarding the feautured post, it always displays the latest one. So if you make any post as sticky (https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-make-sticky-posts-in-wordpress/) then it will be displayed as featured ;)

If I want it to look like the above, do I have to sacrifice video display up front? I assumed because the screenshot depicted an audio embed up front, it would be the same for video. Really hope this is possible!

Finally, what are the ideal dimensions in pixels for featured photos for best display as page backgrounds?

basically yes, if you want to have masonry layout on blog overview there is not going to be video displayed. When we were making the theme we’ve been thinking about putting video there but it wouldn’t be very good from user experience to have video, on the top of video to have color overview with title and post details. of course it is possible to do it, you can have a look at “row” shortcode, it has option to put a video on background. You can take it as an inspiration and do the same thing for blog.

In case you’re not code ninja we could handle this for you as a custom job, as it is not part of standard free support. If you’re interested please let us know via email.

Regarding image dimensions, we’re trying to use 1500x1000px always.
