1. how should I set Product Image Sizes so that I avoid scaling/cropping images of my products (do I also need to tick Hard Crop)?

1. The images should be at least 562px in width. You’ll have to set the correct sizes in the WooCommerce settings page and then use the “Regenerate Thumbnails” plugin to re-create all versions again.

2. Yes, you’ll have to add some CSS to target them and re-style them as WooCommerce sets a default width to those images.
