Portfolio Regular vs Portfolio Square

For some reason when I choose to display the portfolio images as regular they all scrunch up and cut each other off. When I put them on square it fixes to where they are more spread out similar to the demo. I would like to put them on regular so they can have slightly different sizes. Is there a way to fix the scrunching?

Also, is there a way to have the portfolio image link to a different page? Right now it links to the detailed page, and I would like it to link to a custom URL.
