Word Break, Character break issue

What is the pros and cons to breaking the text by the word instead of the character? Will breaking it by the word mess anything up?

I noticed that when resizing the screen, the text is breaking character by character instead of by the word. Is there anyway to have the text not break to a new line half way through a word? or add a hyphen to join the two sections of the word.
